Are you gearing up for that next big project but need help figuring out where to start when planning? As a wellness coach, are you ready to launch a new offer, a course, or podcast episodes? Beginning with a clear plan can set you up for success. One thing that works magically for me is mind mapping. It serves as a simple yet powerful first step. Mind mapping enables you to visualize and organize your project as an activity that enhances your creativity and clarity.
Getting started with your mind mapping
If this is new to you, mind mapping should be defined as transforming your project thoughts into a visual brainstorming session. It allows you to visualize all the following action steps as more than a daunting to-do list.
Getting started with your mind mapping is easy. All you need to do is place the title of your next big idea, your next big launch, maybe it's all wellness course or podcast series at the center of your paper, or in a digital app, something as easy as MindMeister and you're going to encircle it. Now, get creative here. If you like to use colors, go ahead and pull up those pens and highlighters.
From there, I want you to draw lines or spokes out to all the major tasks or categories related to your project in the middle—like everything you need to do, all the things that will bring your project into reality. This becomes the focal point of your planning, helping you prioritize the tasks and visualize the workflow that needs to happen.
Detailing Your Plan From Your Mind Map
Next, we will detail your plan.
The more granular you can make each action step, the easier it is. Stick with me here; I know it sounds like a lot. But the goal is to break down all the big steps into many little tasks. Please look at each action and ask yourself, can I complete this in 10 minutes?
How much easier is it to bring your project or your next big vision into reality? When you know, you can do that in 30 minutes a day. All of those things will bring your project to reality.
Don’t be afraid to do mind mapping to outline your podcast episode. It may be a simple way to keep you consistent with content creation. Use a mind map to design a coursework sheet or prepare a coaching tool list. The more details you break down, the easier each step will be to manage.
For your next course creation, these might look like individual modules. For coaching offers, there can be different session themes. And for your podcast, you can use mind mapping to ensure your episodes align with your next promotion.
This step helps you outline the core structure of your project and ensures that all key elements are considered. By breaking down your project into bite-size tasks, you'll clear your mind and ensure nothing is overlooked.
Reflect and Adjust
Once you have your mind map, you will reflect and adjust it.
Does it feel complete? I want you to take a step back.
Does it cover all aspects that need to take place on that project? Is there a flow to the task that makes sense logically to you time-wise?
Sometimes, a quick break, a walk around the block, or a change of scenery can spark additional insights or necessary adjustments to that plan. Ensure your mind map feels exhaustive and comprehensive. You should look it over to identify any gaps that you missed in the steps along the way.
Transition to Project Management Software To Take Action
The next step with your project map is transitioning to your project management system.
With your detailed mind map ready, the next step is to transfer those tasks into your project management tool. If you do not have project management software and planning is easier for you with a mind map, then MindMeister and Meister Task are excellent options for you. MindMeister is particularly seamless because it integrates all of your tasks from the mind map into Meister Task.
This setup lets you turn your mind map directly into tasks within the project management software. Allowing you to easily assign deadlines, prioritize tasks, outsource to your team, and manage your project effectively from one central location
Setting Realistic Timeframes
When setting up your project, set realistic timeframes. I don’t know about you, but I do not like to feel behind schedule because I have not set realistic deadlines for completing a task.
After laying out all the steps, you need to estimate how long each will take.
Take a moment to consider how long it is. Go ahead. Do it right now; estimate how long each step might take, and I want you to double that estimate.
Why double that time estimate?
Accurately assessing your time is crucial. Do you recall earlier when I mentioned a 10-minute task? The last thing you want is to say you're setting aside 10 minutes for an activity and then take 20.
Do you see why I suggested that you double that time? It is crucial.
It's always better to account for foreseen delays. All the random unplanned actions that come up during the day, especially if your kids are home. Things come up, and they always do.
I’ve been in your shoes. Unknown things will happen in your day when your family might need you because you have an unforeseen emergency or meltdown.
You will feel like you're behind the eight ball when you add unforeseen meltdowns and a poor time estimate.
This approach will help you set realistic expectations and manage your time more effectively. Remember, if you've finished early, you can always move forward or take a well-deserved break.
This method will help ensure that you stay on track without feeling rushed and overwhelmed.
It's More Than Just a Map Your Project
Mind mapping can go beyond just a map of your projects. It is a versatile tool, not limited to project planning. It can be used to jot down your daily gratitudes, set personal goals, organize your thoughts on wellness topics, or even map out your daily activities when you sit down to plan out your week. Incorporating mind mapping into your daily routine can ensure that both your personal and professional life feels balanced and in control.
