How to Set Goals For Yourself – Part One

How to Set Goals For Yourself – Part One

Let me ask, do you want to be someone who sets goals; however, you find the whole process overwhelming, and therefore you never really set goals for yourself? Perhaps goal setting is the easy part for you, and you set goals all the time, though where you find that you run into problems is figuring out the plan to achieve that goal. Or maybe you are the person that sets the goals, creates a plan, and then never actually follows through to achieve the goal. Regardless, setting goals can feel impossible if you don't have the right processes in place to be able to achieve them. Nonetheless, whatever your problem is regarding goals, I've got you. I help dreamers drop their excuses and overwhelm so that they can actually achieve their goals.

What type of Goal Setter are you?

Goal setting, creating plans, and achieving those goals are things that I do all the time with my clients.

Are you a chronic goal setter, but then you struggle to be able to figure out how actually to achieve those goals? For that reason, you may feel like you're kind of floundering in life without a clear sense of direction.

That's exactly what a goal and a plan will do. When you set goals, it provides you with the roadmap to make sure you're moving in the right direction.

What’s amazing about goals, they act as a guideline to make sure that you're staying on track and headed, where you actually want to go in your personal life and in your business.

But what if you are just not sure what direction to move in?

What if your life feels uninspiring to you? It's missing that little something, something; you know, that spark of joy, let's take a look at your current situation across all the areas of your life.

That way you'll have an idea of where you're happy and what needs a little extra attention. What you focus on improves.

The way that you do this is simple. Here’s how it works, you give a rating from one to ten, in each area of your life. One is that you're totally unsatisfied and ten means you're over the moon, happy in that area of your life. Okay, got it?

Wheel of Life to Set Goals

Well, first off get out your notebook and a pen, and write these down.
Here are the eight areas for you to evaluate:

  1. Business/Career
  2. Money
  3. Personal Growth
  4. Self-care (mind, body, spirit)
  5. Family/Friends
  6. Love/Relationships
  7. You Time (fun and your leisure activities)
  8. Home environment

Guess what? If these do not resonate with you and you want to switch it out for something else or a different area in your life, do that because you want to focus on the areas of your life that represent exactly what's important to you in your life and also your business.

After you have all those numbers. Now begin with the areas you're happy with and why. Next; you’re going to move into the areas you want to focus on improving your overall happiness.

What area will you set a goal to focus on?

Now, this is important to begin with one area in your life. Don't make this complicated. If you are new to goal setting, creating plans, or following through, don't make it hard on yourself. Just pick one.

What is the most important, the one you feel most called to? So it's better, to begin with, one area because if you start too big, it's will feel overwhelming. Trust me on this. The problem with starting something new you try to do too much at once.

Now that you have your list and are still not sure what area to give your attention to? In this case, mark the top three areas that contain a low rating. No problem if you're not 100% sure which area you want to focus on right now.

I call it a mind sweep.

At this time, do a mind sweep on your top focal point or the top three. Basically, come up with ways you can improve these areas of your life.

Undeniably the best way to conduct a mind sweep is with pen and paper.

Thus, time to get out that piece of paper, journal, or whatever you like to write on, maybe your iPad. Do a mind sweep, a thought, download, or brain dump. However, you refer to this.

Are you a visual person? Then you may want to do it via a mind map instead. You may be wondering how do you mind map? Well, you simply put one goal in the middle of your piece of paper.

I like to personally draw a circle around it. You can do whatever shape you want. Next off of that goal, you're going to create a little line or spokes. Since you’re visual think of the spokes on a bike. Sound good? Off of the line or spoke you’ll have your main points, off those main points, you can have subtopics as well.

5 Key Questions to Ask Yourself at Mid-Year

5 Key Questions to Ask Yourself at Mid-Year

Holy moly, Friend! Can you believe it is time for a mid-year review? It’s crazy. I think I mentioned to you last week during our discussion on third-quarter planning how quickly time has flown by, and it is all good. I’m not exactly sure when you’ll read this, for me in a few days, it will be the halfway point of the year. As you cross the midpoint of the year, this is the perfect time to pause and reflect on the year thus far. What are the things you've accomplished, and what are the things you're hoping you can achieve for the rest of this year? Here are five key questions to ask yourself at Mid-Year to gauge if you are on track to reach your goals. Be sure to get your hands on the free Mid-Year Review download!

Make time for a mid-year review.

Now, this is important; please schedule time for a mid-year review. If you are not honoring your desire to go after your goals, who will?
Well, of course, besides a private coach, they always hold space for belief in your goal achievement. Just sayin’ I know my coach has the belief in me as I’m tackling my mind drama. You know, when you level up, a whole other door of limiting beliefs seems to open up for you.
A mid-year review will not magically happen if you’re not mindfully setting aside time. Why not pull out your calendar right now and block off a whole day for time to reflect and plan for the months ahead. That’s why the best way to do this is by scheduling time in your calendar.
It says this is important when you create space by blocking time on your calendar for a mid-year review.

Why a mid-review is important to you

I know what you’re thinking; why is it important to do a midyear review? Because it's essential that you know where you're going and to reflect on where you’ve been.
Mid-year is a great time to pause, look back and celebrate all the accomplishments that you've gotten done so far this year.

As well as to take a look forward for the rest of the year of the things that you'd like to still achieve.

Yay! Let's celebrate your wins!

A mid-year review is a perfect time to celebrate! Be Your Own Best Cheerleader! Toot your own horn, Friend! Read this post for more on Be Your Own Cheerleader!

Do you track all your wins?

Just saying, if you're not keeping track of your wins, you should be! Not everyone is disciplined to go after their goals. When you honor your desire for success, it's important to celebrate!

You can keep track in a success jar or write it down in a journal. I have mine in Notion in my daily journaling so that I can really pick one thing every day that I'm celebrating and grateful for.

If you need a bit of guidance on tracking your success, I’ve got you. Here is a previous post on Success Journaling to keep track of your success:

Mid-Year Review Question One

Tell me in the comment below, what are the big and small wins you are celebrating? Now, this is important; each success deserves a little happy dance; spend a little time thanking yourself for accomplishing those!

The first question to ask yourself mid-year is:

What am I celebrating in my life and as an entrepreneur?

Michele Duwe from Miss Task YouTube On Mid-Year Review Questions

Mid-Year Review Reflection

Now that you've cleaned up all the confetti, let’s reflect. Hmm, I’m curious. Is this you? Do you run into trouble reflecting on your life and small business? Are you an entrepreneur who keeps going and doesn't take time to step back and reflect?

Not reflecting is where entrepreneurs run into trouble; they keep going and going without stepping back to reflect. Now is the time to reflect on your small business and the personal goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the year.

How do those goals feel at mid-year?

Are you still aligned with your goals and where you’d like to go as an online entrepreneur?

As your online business grows and transforms, the goals that you’ve set at the beginning of the year may no longer feel in alignment. That’s okay. Here’s the big secret: you must be willing to let go of what is no longer aligned with your business and personal goals.

It’s important to reflect and do a mid-year reset to build up the steam for the remaining year in your online business.

Mid-Year Review Question Two

What big goals did you set at the beginning of the year? Are they still there? Are you still working at 'em?

Taking time to reflect is a critical piece to goal setting and goal accomplishment. You must spend time evaluating what you have done and if you’re on track to achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself at the beginning of 2022 or whatever year you’re reading this. (;

The second question to ask yourself at mid-year is:

Am I still on course to achieve the goals I set for myself in my life and as an entrepreneur? Why or why not?

Mid-Year Review Question Three

Numbers tell a story about what is working and not working in your online business.

The third question is more of a set of questions to ask yourself mid-year and will give you a realistic look at the first six months of your small business.

Here are questions to ask yourself mid-year as an audit of your numbers in your online small business.

Finances

  • What do your finances look like for the first six months?
    • Gross Revenue
    • Costs
  • How much have you paid yourself?
  • Are you on track to hit your yearly revenue goals?
  • How can you shift your offering to hit your financial goals if not?
  • How is your spending?
    • Are you on a budget?
    • Do you have any areas where you’re overspending?
  • What is your profit for the year?

Marketing

What are your marketing efforts saying to you? Begin with your website; where is your traffic coming from? Page visits? What are the blog topics or keywords that generate the most traffic?

Why do you want to know this? These would be great topics for your content calendar!

Next, check your email marketing, has your email list grown? How were the open rates? Click through rate with your call to action? Are you getting engagement from your email list?

Social Media

Finally, review your social media numbers. What is the engagement rate? Do you know what content had the best engagement? How about what content has the worst engagement? Use this information for your content calendar.

Mid-Year Review Question Four

What is your vision? You need to start with the end in mind. What is the vision for your life as an online entrepreneur? Do you know how you want your life to look three years from now?

The fourth question during your mid-year review for your online business:

Where am I going, and why?
Where do I want to be 90 days from now?
Where do I want to be by the end of this year?

Mid-Year Review Question Five

Another key piece of your mid-year review is getting honest with your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs. What thoughts keep you from achieving your vision for your life and as an online entrepreneur?

The fifth question to ask yourself at mid-year is:

Where are my thoughts getting in the way of my vision for my future?

Not sure? No problem, ask it this way instead.

If I did know where my thoughts were getting in the way of my vision for the future, what would they be?

Our thoughts and feelings create our actions and results. It’s important to be mindful of what your thoughts are regarding the success of your online business.

Mid-Year Goals

To conclude your mid-review of your online business, set new goals or create a new plan on how to achieve the goals you’ve already set! If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you get there? Mid-year goal setting allows you to plan for the rest of the year!

Small Change Makes A Big Difference | Habit Change

Small Change Makes A Big Difference | Habit Change

I get it. Are you trying to make a habit change and keep failing? Do you ask why it is so hard to start a habit? I have been there and done that myself. Let's talk about what you can do to make those new habits stick. Have you found yourself in this habit loop? You have some new HUGE habit change that you want to create in your life; it’s not a small change. As a matter of fact, it will require you to start a good habit; however, you keep failing no matter how many tricks you try. You get on the habit train, and then shortly after that, you get off. What is a life-changing new habit that you want to create to transform your life? It’s so dang frustrating each time you start so good, but it ends the same way, with you struggling to follow through to make a big difference in your life. When you set out to change your life, you typically feel that you’ll need to make big changes to see significant results. What if, instead, you start with a tiny, simple change that you can begin and then simply add onto to make a big difference. So what is one big change you'd like to see in your life?

What is one big habit change?

What is it? Undoubtedly, you’ve been wondering how to start a new habit. What is one simple step? If you do that consistently, you will begin to feel a big wave of change start.

What's one possible daily change you can make that will compound into a huge life change over time. To begin with, think small; what's one little thing that you can do to start moving forward to create a new habit. So here's a perfect example that I'd love to share with you today.

How Small Change Makes A Big Difference

In addition to being a private coach, I am also an operations manager for small online businesses. Recently, during our annual employee reviews, each employee set a personal goal that they wanted to achieve in the upcoming year for themselves and a company goal we set jointly.

We want to help support them personally and professionally to achieve their goals. One of the employees set this big, huge goal to quit smoking. Wow, that's a big life-change goal.

Oh, how life-changing and difficult it is to quit smoking. This advice came from another manager who happens to be a former smoker.

Fantastic advice on how to start a new healthy habit

He said he actually quit smoking because he stopped having a cigarette 15 minutes earlier every day. Wow. Is that not just one tiny, small thing you could do daily to change a habit?

Every day he would just have his last cigarette 15 minutes earlier. On the first night, he had a cigarette 15 minutes earlier than the day before.

Do you see how one small change makes a big difference? It all began with the decision to start small.

Above is the perfect example of a simple step to create a new habit. When you find a small doable change in new habits, it will be easy to stick to making massive life-changing results.

With this in mind, can you think of how to start a good habit for yourself?

Instead of all or nothing, how can you apply the 15-minute principle to make a big difference?

Michele Duwe from Miss Task | Small Change Makes A Big Difference | Habit Change

Start A Healthy Habit

Do you drink a lot of soda and would like to replace that with a healthy habit of drinking water? A simple step to start a new healthy habit of drinking water instead of soda would be to decrease your ounces per day of soda while increasing the ounces per day of water. This is easy and doable. One ounce at a time until you have swapped completely. Again a perfect example of one small doable change that you can make that leads to huge results.

Here are a few other examples that I could think of off the top of my head.

Have you wanted to start a yoga practice and give up after a short time? Why not start with one pose a day? Maybe you begin with just doing one down dog a day; after a week, you add on child pose. I’ve Googled for you already the best yoga poses for beginners. Here are the five best poses.

What to mediate? Start with a couple of minutes, 30 seconds, possibly a minute; just start small and add on as you truly get into it a little bit more, cuz who says that it has to be all or nothing.

One last example is to create a one-step unwind routine if you need to get more sleep. The routine could be taking a bath or reading a book for fifteen minutes. Plan your day backward from your bedtime and create space for your unwind routine. By planning backward, you make sure that you have time to get everything done that you want to get done before you unwind and go to bed.

Again, we're not looking for some pie-in-the-sky change; pick one small doable change and just stick with it, stick with that one thing.

Start with those small, doable changes that make it easier and easier to form that new habit over time.

How will you start a good habit?

Let me ask again, is there one area in your life where you can use this exact same technique by starting with one small action that will compound and compound over time?

And the best part is committing to a small change will feel much easier for your brain. This is how you start a new habit and make it easy. What you want to do is make the plan so easy. It should feel simple. The simple solutions are the ones we tend to overlook.

We want your thoughts to be. That's easy. Oh my gosh. That's so easy. That's so simple. Yeah. I can totally do that. You want to get your brain on board that you are 100% bought into this new habit. When your mind starts to take you down the same old path, tell yourself this plan feels simple enough; it is easy for me. Before you know it, your new habit will be who you are because your small change became a routine that turned into a healthy habit. Then it's just second nature, and it's just who you are.

You also prove to yourself; you prove to own self that you are a person that follows through on what you say you’ll do. You’ll believe you’re able to accomplish hard things, that you're able to make a commitment and follow through on that commitment.

If you’re the person who often puts other people ahead of what you said you’d do for yourself. Well, you know what, just do it for yourself. I give you permission to put yourself first once in a while when it comes to taking a small action to create big habits and changes in your life. You’re the only one that can commit to the change.

Change starts small. And I promise it will compound over time. You may find yourself adding more little things to that one small change. It will have a ripple effect to change so many other things in your life. So friend, if you want that ripple effect in your life, I invite you to apply for my private coaching.

The button to apply and work with me is down below. After applying, you’ll be sent an email to schedule a call to discuss the small changes that make a big difference in your life.

Thank you so much for your time. I appreciate you, and have a wonderful week.

Private Coaching

Why do I believe in the power of private coaching?

Because it is truly life-changing. When your coach asks you that mind-blowing question that suddenly allows you to see what you've been missing all along that was literally right in front of your face.

You just need someone with a different perspective to help you see it.

Are you ready to experience life from a different perspective?
