Simple Tasks for a Digital Declutter of Your Computer

Simple Tasks for a Digital Declutter of Your Computer

While this is a little embarrassing to admit, I tend to be a digital hoarder. Do you find yourself in the same boat or is it just me? If so, here are nine simple tasks for a digital declutter of your computer.

If you run a digital business, you work day in and day out on your computer which causes you to become blind to all the clutter on your computer. Okay, well at least that is the case for me. Here are nine simple tasks that can be done for a declutter and organization of your computer. For me, that is a MacBook Pro and iMac.

Task One

Okay, back to being a digital hoarder, if I run across something that I may want to reference in the future I’d download it. My download folder is overflowing.

Since I began using Notion, that has become my holding bin for inspiration and swipe files.

But before Notion, things were downloaded onto my computer causing my download folder to become overwhelmed with different files. With full honesty, it's not been a high priority to actually go through and clean those things up until now, because it's ridiculous the number of files that I have on my computer, and it's time to get it organized, and cleaned up.

Simple task one is deleting the files out of the Downloads folder.

Everything that comes into your computer will land in your downloads folder. Even if you move that from the Downloads folder into a permanent location it is just creating a copy and the file stays in the Downloads folder.

Go through get rid of all those files. Because more than likely, it's all duplicate files in there that have been moved out. If they haven’t been done you really want or need them?

Here is a quick tip, if you use Chrome as your browser under the advanced setting in your preference you can select Ask where to save each file before downloading. This will cut down on the files landing in your Download folder in the future.

Task Two

Simple task two is to declutter your desktop. I screenshot all the time, do you? I use screenshots when I’m creating standard operating procedures or workflows.

I'm going to go through and clean all those out, completely delete them all.

Be real, you’d never come back to go through all your screenshot to see if you have one already. Heck no, it takes a lot less time to just screenshot it again and be done.

Did you do it? Good, me too.

Digital Declutter of your Computer

Task Three

Simple Task Three, declutter not used applications. Apple makes it really easy to download applications on your computer. Have you ever downloaded an application and find it wasn’t what you were looking for, so it just sitting on your computer taking up space?

Jump into your applications, sort it by last opened and take a look at all the applications you haven’t open in over 6 months. Do you really need them? Nope, get rid of it. What is the point of having it on your computer?

Task Four

Simple Task Four, declutter all those saved shortcuts in your browser. I have so many of these. As I look through a lot of these I either deleted them or added them into Notion.

I know me and it’s rare that I look at some of these bookmarks. It’s just digital clutter that needs to be removed.

Task Five

Simple Task Five, declutter all those browser extensions. This one is like applications, you think it will be helpful and you add it. Then you soon discover it really wasn’t all that helpful and there it sits in your Google Browser cluttering up the place.

If the browser extension is not pinned, you can be deleted. Speaking for myself, I know me and I do not click on that puzzle piece to see what’s behind it.

Actually, by looking at the list I removed extensions that were actually pinned that I know I do not use. Remember that point of blind to the clutter.

Task Six

Simple Task Six, organize and clear out Finder. Move around and clean out anything else that you have in Finder. Add things to your favorites or get rid of anything that’s not needed.

Do you need to organize your folders differently or update your tags?

For me, this was OneDrive as I use that as well with my business. It’s really where I stored all my photos and videos.

Task Seven

Simple Task Seven, all the pictures and videos. It’s simple to keep all those photos that are blurry or duplicated with digital storage. But do you really need them? When you’re searching for a photo how fun is it to go through crappy photos to just find one that is actually good.

Clear them out and organize them for ease in the future.

Task Eight

Simple Task Eight, run your virus scan software if this doesn’t automatically run.

Task Nine

Simple Task Nine, run Clean My Mac. I’m guessing that PC has something similar, but it’s been far too long since I used to PC to remember what that was.

Tapping into success (EFT)

Tapping into success (EFT)

Tapping into your success, and I mean this literally. When I say tapping, I’m referring to the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).

This is a tool that I added to my bag of tricks when I began the online business journey. The mantra for EFT is “Try it on everything”.

If you’re asking what is EFT, read this

Okay, this could be a little woo for you depending on your woo level, but give it a try. I too was skeptical of anything that seemed woo when I transferred into entrepreneurship. However, this is backed by science, and as a girl that questions everything, I like data and research.

The Emotional Freedom Technique is based on a more complex technique called Thought Field Therapy (TFT) created by Roger Callahan. After taking Callahan’s course, EFT founder Gary Craig realize he could greatly simplify the procedure, and EFT was born. Gary Craig’s entire EFT manual is available as a free download from emofree.com.

Intro to EFT

Within the first year of my business, I was introduced to EFT by one of my very first clients. She splits her time living between the midwest in the United States and Australia depending on the seasons. What a smart lady never dealing with winter weather.

We would have daily tapping sessions together, we would take turns leading on what limiting belief was popping up for us. We’d spend a few minutes discussing what was coming up for each of us and we’d tap together. Generally, we were both pretty in sync with our limiting beliefs around starting our businesses.

Tapping into success (EFT)

What exactly is EFT?

It is a therapy technique loosely based on the techniques of acupuncture and acupressure. It uses the same basic energy meridians in the body to eliminate physical, emotional, and mental issues.

Huh?

You tap on key points on your body to move around energy.

I know, right.

By tapping on these key points on our body you give yourself the opportunity to balance the flow.

Tapping into success

Of course, I use this in my life and business and have done so with success. Friend, I’m here to help you short track your success, not take the roundabout way as I did.

What are you struggling with?

It’s important to get down to the true emotion that you’re struggling with, do you need to get to the cause and not the effect.

What is causing you to feel like (you fill in the blank).

Not sure? Pull out that journal and list out all the possibilities. For me, I can tie most back to my emotions around not knowing enough and rejection.

Do you feel an emotional charge?

What do you need to tap on, the memories or emotions that bring up an emotional charge for you? Do you know where you feel this specifically in your body?

Tapping is really personal, we all have our own baggage and views of the world.

This is where the journalling comes in pretty handy.

You want to find those things that bring on the emotional string. Dig into the root of the emotions and tap on those.

Try It With

Use EFT on your headaches, emotional blockages, and limiting emotions. As the mantra goes “Try it on everything”

Besides my limiting beliefs, I use tapping for sleep. Let me say, sleep can be a struggle for me. Most nights, it takes forever for me to fall asleep, I wake up very easily and frequently in the night.

When I use EFT consistency I receive the best results. Sleep is the biggest place that I’ve used tapping.

Can you think of an area that you can try this with?

I feel like I need to give the disclaimer, I am not a licensed health care provider and this is not medical advice. If you have health issues, please seek help from a doctor.

Success Is In Consistency

With anything in life and business success comes with consistency. It makes everything flow easier and it creates the habit.

If you struggle with creating consistency, do a little habit stacking. In the book, Atomic Habits, James Clear talks about creating habits and using a current habit to trigger a new habit.

Habit stack your new tapping tool with a current habit that triggers you. James mentions in his book, this method was created by BJ Fogg as part of his Tiny Habits program.

That’s how I’ve created my evening routine. If you’ve been around me at all, I’m guessing you may have heard me say Good Morning start the night before. I know my family sure has.

Anyway, in the evenings I make sure I have everything ready to go for the morning.

  • Lemon water prepped with lemon, juicer, coffee cups, cutting board, and knife next to the tea kettle.
  • Coffee pot ready to go
  • Dog food in the dishes
  • Airpods and iPad ready
  • Brush Teeth
  • After I am done brushing my teeth, I will tap for a good night’s sleep and to fall asleep quickly and easily. This is right before I crawl into bed.

It’s my habit stacking because I already did all the other things

Read the steps below on how to tap or watch this YouTube Video.

How exactly do you tap?

The basic structure is:

  • The Setup
  • The Sequence
  • The Suggestions

To Begin, rate your problem from zero to ten. On a scale of zero to ten with zero being not at all, how would you rate your feeling/emotion/Issue/Pain? In general, think of 10 as the worst feeling/emotion/issue/pain you’ve ever experienced. That’s how I personally gauge it.

The goal is to tap down a few points lower with each round.

Okay, now that you have what you’re going to tap on and you’ve given it a rating, let's move to The Setup.

The Setup

Do not skip The Setup, it is vital to the whole process and prepares the energy systems.

On the pinky side of your hand, between the bottom of the pinky finger and the bottom of the hand. Basically the side of your palm.

This is called the karate chop point. Have you ever seen a demonstration of karate-chopping a piece of wood? It’s the same place you’ll be tapping.

We are going to tap on the side of the hand while repeating the below affirmation three times:

“Even though I have this (feeling/emotion/issue/pain), I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

The Sequence

The other points for tapping are:

  • Eyebrow (at the inside end of your eyebrow)
  • Side of the Eye (just at the side of your eye on the eye bone)
  • Under the Eye (in the middle just under the eye)
  • Under the Nose (tap in the middle between your nose and lip)
  • Chin (tap in the middle of your chin on your dimple if you have one)
  • Collar Bone (tap on the inside of your collar bone)
  • Under Arm (under your arm, for ladies at your bra strap area)
  • Top of Head (the top of your head just in front of the crown)

Tap each point seven to ten times by repeating the feeling/emotion/issue/pain and by bringing in all the other points that are similar that you journaled about.

Go through a round or two and check back where you are on the scale.

One key to this working is you have to focus on what you’re tapping about, not your to-do list when you’re done tapping.

The goal is to get to zero before you move on to the suggestions part of the tapping.

The Suggestions

The suggestions are my favorite. This is the part where you tap on the positive suggestions.

Run through all the tapping points again.

Tap each point seven to ten times by giving positive suggestions and by bringing in all the positive things you’d like that you journaled on.

So you want to make an impact

So you want to make an impact

So you want to make an impact, easy right? Where do you need to get out of your own way to make that impact? Is it the story that you’re telling yourself?

We teach what we most need to learn

I started my business in 2016, with the desire in my heart to actually start making an impact in businesses, in lives. As a sales rep, while I work in an industry that was always making an impact, I never personally felt like I was making a difference. It’s one of my values to make an impact and to make people feel appreciated.

Prior to our sale reorganization that gave me the freedom to start my business, I already had made the decision to start a business, when and if something happened to my job. Heck, I even told my husband about it, but I didn’t do anything I was way too comfortable.

Our Mind Likes Comfortable

Are you like I was in the beginning? You have big dreams to start an online business or you’ve started a side hustle but you’re not making the impact you imagined in your mind. Do you find yourself wondering why is this so easy for others and to you feels as if you’re just getting off and on the struggle bus?

Our minds like us to feel comfortable and safe. It takes courage to step out of our comfort zone to become an entrepreneur.

It’s our mind clutter that makes us uncomfortable. Take time to quiet the mind clutter and get comfortable with the uncomfortable.

So you want to make an impact

Challenge yourself

This is exactly what I had to do at the beginning of my journey, every day I had to challenge myself to get out of my comfort zone. To take the risk and know I’ll be okay.

Heck, I’m still doing it every single time I record a YouTube video. I questioned myself how could you sell hundreds of thousands of dollars in software, but you can’t sell your services?

It became clear to me one day, it was easy to be told no selling software, I didn’t create that but it was my own sweat and tears that they were saying no too and that felt like a personal rejection.

Now what? I had a good idea of what was holding me back from making an impact.

Do the inner work

This is where I had to go deep and do the inner work, I had to figure out where these feelings were coming from. If I wasn’t able to get over the feeling of personal rejection, I’d be stuck in the same place not making a true impact.

Shh…

A simple shh, to yourself, when your mind starts to fire off at you; alert, alert danger ahead you’re stepping into the feelings of unsure and uncomfortable.

It’s our mind clutter that makes us uncomfortable.

You know the Albert Einstein quote:
“We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.”

This is truer than true.

It’s our thoughts that get us in trouble

Think about the reason why you do not want to do it, whatever “it” maybe, what is the reason why you want to do it? What is the purpose?

Still, struggling?

No problem, let’s change the story. I want you to think about a time when you stepped out of your comfort zone to make an impact.

Got it? Good.

How did you feel? What did you do differently to get out of your head?

Still?

I’ve got you if you’re still struggling to change that story. What if, you do nothing and stay not ready?

That doesn’t feel good.

You may not be ready, but you need to be willing.

Start small when you’re not ready to give it your all.

Final Thought

You have to lead yourself before you can make an impact on others.

This is one that I wish I would have discovered a lot earlier in my online business journey, oh well I discovered it when I was ready to embrace it.

You have to lead yourself first. You have to be the shining example for others.

In your mind, do you see yourself as a leader, if not why? How can you change that story?

We hear, lead by example. Do that, be the example so that others can feel your impact.
