Are you setting impossible expectations for yourself?

Are you setting impossible expectations for yourself?

Do you believe that the impossible is possible? It is true that belief can be half the battle, but what if you struggle to believe. Are you setting impossible expectations for where your beliefs are at?

Set The Bar

Isn't it amazing when you hear a great podcast that stops you in your tracks? This podcast did exactly that for me. According to Christine Kane, you should always set a bar that you can actually reach. By doing so, you will regularly experience the energy of completion.

Listen to it here.

Hmm…

This made me wonder if there are areas in my life where I am setting impossible expectations that I don't fully believe I can meet? What is the best way to push start the belief?

One that comes to mind is doing twenty perfect push-ups on my toes when I struggle with two at the moment.

Then it dawned on me: to push the belief forward, we need to break it down into small, achievable steps.

As a business owner, I'm constantly breaking down big goals into milestones.

Is there a reason I wasn't doing the same thing with my personal goals to strengthen my belief in myself?

Impossible Expectations

We can derail our progress if we set impossible expectations. We can feel defeated whenever we take longer than we expect to achieve our goals.

What is the purpose of putting ourselves under that kind of pressure? Don't get me wrong, I believe that setting goals push us forward. Is it necessary to set impossible expectations for every goal we set?

What if there were a few that were easy to complete? Then set a new milestone along the way to achieving your bigger goal? Thinking about it from the perspective that I can hit rather than the fairytale of comparison I am creating in my head.

What about your goals?

What are the current goals you have for your life? What goals could you chuck down into baby ones, focusing on taking smaller steps instead of taking giant ones?

Did You Know That Unmade Decisions Clutter Your Life?

Did You Know That Unmade Decisions Clutter Your Life?

Have you ever stopped to think about how all those unmade decisions are quietly cluttering your life? Let me guess, the answer is no. Our days are already filled with making decisions from when we decide to open our eyes in the morning until we decide to close them again at night.

Unmade Decisions

What about all those unmade decisions you have floating around in your brain. I bet if you sat down right now, you’d be able to write out at least ten from the little things to big things we have going on in our lives.

Did you ever stop to think about how those are affecting you?

Cause You To Be Overwhelmed

Have you given any thought to how your unmade decisions cause you to be overwhelmed and stressed?

How are they affecting your productivity? Let me ask, have you had this happen to you?

You’re heads down, in full concentration mode, and suddenly that unmade decision is triggered. Your productivity comes off the rails because now you are focused on that unmade decision.

Unmade Decisions

How they impact us

I think you’ll agree with me when I say unmade decisions impact our sleep, concentration, and well-being.

The problem is it impacts our overall feelings of joy and happiness. Have you stopped to think about it in that way?

The time you spend deliberating over an unmade decision has a consequence on your life. It all boils down to this, they hold us back from progress. Leave us feeling exhausted, clutter our brains, and in the end, it is just procrastination.

Make the decision

The solution is simple, make the decision. If you need to do research to decide, put time on your calendar to get it done.

Look at how the decision will affect you in five years? If it has minimal impact on our future, it should take you very little time to decide.

Ask yourself why you’re making the decision so hard? Why are your thoughts ruminating over this decision? Our thoughts drive our actions and results.

Now, this is important; what are you scared of? What are you afraid will happen if you make the decision? Fear can pop up in strange places.

And this is where people run into trouble; you do not think that carrying around your unmade decisions is causing you to feel overwhelmed. But there’s a catch from not deciding, you are cluttering your mind and staying stuck.

What is the worst that can happen if you just decided already?

When you find yourself overthinking

When you find yourself overthinking

I know what it is like to be caught up in overthinking. The last time I checked, overthinking about all the things that bring us joy and happiness doesn’t cause stress and overwhelm. Nope, our stress and overwhelm come from overthinking our future, past, and all the things we think could go wrong. All the junk that we have little to no control over.

Made Up Disaster

It’s funny our minds are always on red alert, looking for all the things that could go wrong. You may have guessed, our minds are continuously searching for different ways to keep us safe from the made-up disaster that we create in our own heads.

I think you’ll agree with me when I say we overthink because we are spending time thinking about the past or the future and not this present moment.

Tell me, Friend, is this very moment scary? Nope, let me guess you’re not overwhelmed at this very second either. Funny how that works.

When you find yourself overthinking

2 AM Thinking

I wonder if you can relate to my favorite overthinking that happens in my mind. All those past conversations that I need to rehash in my brain. Why did I say that I should have said this, or I forgot to mention that.

Talk about a big waste of time.

Let me walk you through how I handle it; this just happened to me the other night at 2 AM!

My mind started repeating a conversation I had the day before. Once I noticed what was happening, I told my brain to hold up, Michele; you are in the past, nothing you can do about it now, just let it go. When it resurfaced a bit later, I simply said Michele, let it go.

How about you?

Really, here’s the thing what are the chances of the exact conversation coming up again? Well, unless you’re chatting with a two-year-old, then the possibility of repeat conversations doesn’t come up.

How to overcome your overthinking

Here are suggestions on how to overcome your overthinking.

Find a go-to mantra or prayer when you notice you are beginning to overthink a situation.
An example could be: I’m not sure what will happen next, and that’s okay. I’ll find a solution when the time is right.

Pull out your journal and break down what is causing you to spin into overthinking. Our overthinking is just thoughts. Our thoughts create our action or, worst, our inaction. Put all that overthinking on paper and keep writing until you are off the spinning wheel of overthinking.

What if you’re not able to journal? No problem, simply pause and kindly tell your brain, thank you for keeping me safe, but that’s just a thought. I need not worry or overthink.

Laugh about it! Let out a laugh when you notice that your thoughts are running away from you.

Flip the script; what are you grateful for? Tell your mind that you are so thankful for preparing for disaster. But right now, we will focus on the good in our lives. We will be grateful for all we have and not worry about the rest.

Try these out, and let me know if they work for you!

Little Side Note

The problem is, all our overthinking causes overwhelm and dissatisfaction in our lives. Honestly, can you think of a time when overthinking filled you with joy and happiness?

I didn’t think so.
